The distinction matters more than the number. A donation is what remains at the end of the year, and a poor year reaches the end with empty hands. A cost is paid first, so in a poor year the four percent is a heavier weight on a lighter business.

The figure was settled at the same time as the sixteen wild hectares and the hundred-kilometre rule, and for the same reason. A promise that is free in a good year is worthless in a bad one.

The funds go in three directions. Back to Nature, out to the oceans, and forward to the children who will inherit both.

Some of the money stays here. The sixteen wild hectares, the recovery of the olive terracing, and the dry-stone walls that have held this hillside for centuries and have gone unmended for the last forty years.

On departure you receive a Personal Impact Report, which sets out what your stay returned to the land while you were here: soil carbon, water, species counted, and the share belonging to you. Alongside what returns to Nature, the human part of what the stay did for you, in your own words.

The Blockchain Accountability Ledger will hold the same record, one stay at a time. A ledger of this kind cannot be silently edited after the fact, which is the only reason to use one. A figure published in 2029 will still read the same in 2039, whether it flattered us or not. The record is open to review, so anyone building something similar can see what worked and what did not.
